2010 OSHC South Africa Event – May 2-5, 2010

The dates and location for the 10th Annual  One Shot Hunt in South Africa are set.  We will be returning to the Tshipise Resort on May 2 through May 5, 2010.  This is the area where we support a number of country schools.  The resort has been renovated with a new restaurant, bar and other improvements.  Forever Resorts, a partner with the OSHC on many mission projects, has been very accommodating hosting our African events.  Mark your calendar and make plans to attend in 2010.  It will be a great time and place to celebrate our 10th year.

Highlights of the One Shot Event – April 2009

The One Shot Hunt Club annual South African hunt was held April 26 – 29, 2009.  It was held at the Islyala Resort near Loskopdam.  Five teams participated in the competition.  They were:

Decs and Charles Eales

Jerry Hertlein and Hector Kitscha

Bob Viden and Craig Dear

Joy Hertlein and Koos Botha

Howard Knott and Brand Pretorious.

The team of Decs and Charles Eales won the competition.

The Thabakhubeon Primary School was visited by the OSHC participants.  They distributed caps, mealy meal, pencils, crayons, writing paper erasers and pencil sharpeners.  The following is a letter sent to us from the school principal.

Thabakhubeon Primary School

The school is situated in a deep rural area.  The status of the school is as follows:

1.      Location of the school: Far from town and no subsidy or home loan is allowed in our area.

2.      Employment: Most parents who were working are retrenched some years ago.  Only 1% of parents are working though not stable or professional work.  Most people depend on social grants from the government.

3.      Learners: They are either orphans or have single parent.  Most parents are learners at local high schools – are not working.

4.      Neighboring Schools: Mothibedi, Tagane and Bantwane are categorized in quintile 1 where our school is categorized in quintile 3 and all the above mentioned schools are situated in the same area and with same people.

5.      Recommendation: The school earnestly pleads that it is categorized as quintile 1 due to the above mentioned conditions.

Your sympathetic consideration of this report will be appreciated.

Maicitla Icj

The OSHC is adding this school to our list of schools we will be supporting.

The One Shot Hunt Club and Foundation are very fortunate to have the support of Forever Resorts.  Forever Resorts promotes the OSHC and has been a partner with our mission projects.  Thanks to Islyala Resort and its staff.

Wheelchair Distribution

The wheelchair distribution continues to be a great success.  A third shipment of 550 wheelchairs has arrived in South Africa.  So far, we have distributed over 950 chairs and have 750 available for distribution.  OSHC is supported by the Free Wheelchair Mission who supplies the wheelchairs and Forever Resorts who clears customs, stores and helps in the distribution.  It is a great mission project for all.

A delegation of donors from the Free Wheelchair Mission is planning a visit to South Africa in November.  They be guest of Forever Resorts and will get an on hands experience of distributing wheelchairs to the needy.

Other Mission News

The OSHC Foundation continues to be active with a number of projects.

·         The Foundation continues to support the kids in the country schools.  It remains one of our top priorities.  The three schools in the Tshipise area remain on the support list.

·         We are actively working with Christo Wagenaar of Forever Resorts to drill a well at Dennilton School.  This will give the school running water.  We have also had requests from other schools for the same.

·         Due to lack of office space at Tshipise we are moving the computer facility to two locations.  The Unity Primary School at Tzaneen, SA will use eight computers.  The Messina School near Tshipise (recommend by Howard Knott) will use four computers.

 2009 South Africa OSHC Event

The One Shot Hunt Club 2009 event is being scheduled over a two week period to give our members and associate members a chance to experience some other offerings besides what the South African One Shot Hunt has offered in the past.  Thanks to Forever Resorts, they are supporting the OSHC by setting up this very affordable package.  The way it has been structured, it is not necessary for one to attend all the events.  If you are only interested in the Fishing and Touring segment or only in the One Shot Hunt segment we can accommodate you wishes.

Fishing and Touring Segment- Here is a chance of a life time to fish the Indian Ocean for a variety of fish at the prime fishing time of the year.  The fish available are Black Marlin, Sailfish, Dolphin, Blue Marlin, Tuna, Kingfish, Sea Bass, Striped Marlin and Dorado.  If there is enough interest, there will be sightseeing and shopping trips planned for those not interested in fishing at a nominal cost.  The participants will be leaving Pretoria on Monday morning April 20, 2009, motoring to Sodwana Bay on the Indian Ocean.  The fishing contest will commence on Tuesday, April 21 and run through 1:00 PM on Friday, April 24, 2009.  On Friday evening at Sodwana Bay, there will be dinner, silent auction and award presentations.

Second Annual One Shot Fundraiser – October 7, 2008

The OSHC pheasant hunt held at Wern Valley Sportsmen’s Club and dinner at Country Springs Hotel was very successful.  Eighteen hunters participated in pheasant tower shoot.  There were sixty-nine in attendance for the dinner and auction that evening.  The net profit for the event was $23,732.  Thanks to all who donated their time and those who supplied auction items.

 Need of Auction Items

The success of One Shot Fundraiser in October has depleted our list of auction items.  First, we would like to thank all who have been so generous to the OSHC Foundation through their donations of hunts, lodging, fishing, shrimping and various other items.  It has given the Foundation the opportunity to fulfill many mission projects in South Africa.  We are again asking you help.  Anyone who would like to donate an auction item, especially hunts, please contact Jack Hagen.  Jack’s telephone number is (2620 377-8238 and e-mail address is hagenjg@sbcglobal.net .

 Mission

The club continues to fulfill its mission of helping those in southern Africa.  We continue to support on going projects and are pursuing some new ones.

ü  The wheelchair project is a huge success as we have found an enormous need in southern Africa.  We have distributed over 1000 wheelchairs and will soon be getting another 550 for distribution.

ü  The country schools remain as one of our most important missions.  We continue visits each year to distribute school supplies, mealy meal, hats, shoes and other needs.  The number of schools we support continues to increase.  There are three schools in the Tshipise area and one in the Loskopdam area.

ü  We have had requests for help in drilling wells at two country schools.  One request is for the Ekucathuleni School located near Loskopdam.  This request has been approved by the local municipality and will soon be drilled.  The second request is for Smokey Village and school located near Tshipise.  This project has been requested and hopefully will soon be underway.

ü  Another school request is to build a computer classroom at the Khomela School located near Tshipise.  We are reviewing the costs and how to supply the computers for this project.

ü  The computer training center at the Forever Resorts in Tshipise is operational.  This facility will provide computer training to school teachers and others in the community.

 2008 OSH Event

The following is a summary written by Hector of the 2008 event:

2008 ONE SHOT HUNT CLUB EVENT REPORT

In terms of visualizing support for the Club mission, the 2008 event has to be the most successful in the history of the Club.

We established a partnership between the Club and Forever Resorts, a company that supports the mission of the Club with financial and manpower resources.

The strategy of our Club is to transfer all functions related to the distribution of items for children, their schools, clinics and communities to South Africa personnel selected by the management of the Forever Resorts, as well as officers of the Club.

To initiate this transfer at the Board Meeting held July 20, 2008 the Board of Directors appointed Christo Wagenaar as the Vice President of Operations of the OSHC-SA and also as a Director.  In addition, the Board also elected Mr. Brand Pretorius as a Director of the Club.

At the Board Meeting we also appointed Decs as the Hunt Master.  Decs will assume the responsibility of preparing the rifle range and providing guidance to new PH’s involved relative to the One Shot competition.

Another important appointment made was Elizabeth Williamson as the Clubs “Educational Consultant African Primary Schools”.

The competition was held at various resorts, and these were Isiyala, Amanzi and Loskopdam.  We had three competitions:

Impala One Shot                     Winning team:  Hector Kitscha/Dave Bahl

Guinea Fowl                           Winning team: Marius Snygans/Johan Blignaut

  Fishing                                    Winner:  Thys Luyt

Overall Winners                    Glenn Williamson/Francois de Wet

Member of the Year               Christo Wagenaar

After the competition we visited a school near Loskopdam to distribute knitted caps, shoes, school supplies and mealy meal.  This school of 700 children presented us with a request for a well to provide water for the school.  We estimate the cost of the complete installation to be R35,000.  We plan to get an official estimate from Dries Botes, a person who drills wells and provides the complete system.  Dave Bahl will evaluate the estimate and submit it to the Executive Committee for approval.

After the school visit we visited a local hospital where we distributed ten wheelchairs this year.  In 2007 we had distributed a total of 29 wheelchairs to this hospital.

From Loskopdam we traveled to the Tshipise Resort to visit three schools that we have supported for the last four years.  At these schools we distributed mealy meal, school supplies, knitted caps and shoes.  About 600 children were involved in the three schools visited.

From Tshipise we traveled to Warmbaths Resort to attend a graduation ceremony of Forever Resorts Academy graduates.  It was a fantastic ceremony which we enjoyed very much.  On the same date we had the pleasure of meeting the President of Forever Resorts worldwide, Dr. Rex Maughan.  Dr. Maughan is a great individual who shares the same goals as the OSHC-SA.  We feel that by working together we can achieve greater goals.

The chairperson of the Talje Home for Retarded and Handicapped Children joined our group, as well as Dr. Maughan and his managers, for a breakfast meeting.  During the meeting we presented the home with ten wheelchairs and a donation of $1000 to buy disposable diapers for the children involved.

Dr. Maughan presented the home with a donation of R130,000 to buy a vehicle to transport the handicapped children.

All of us who participated in the OSHC event want to express our appreciation to Forever Resorts for their hospitality and overall support to our mission to help the needy children of South Africa.

Breaking News!  New Date for 2008 OSHC Event

The 2008 One Shot Hunt Event

The One Shot Hunt Club will be holding its annual hunt from July 20th to July 24th 2008. Our apologies for the many changes of this date that have been announced these past few months. Due to scheduling PH’s, resort available dates and OSHC member’s preferences we have tried to set a date acceptable to most. We have heard from a number of people that an April or May date is not preferable for various reasons. Therefore, with the help of Forever Resorts, we have set a date of July 20 through 24, 2008. The event will be at a new location. It will be held at Forever Resort Loskop Dam located on the Olifants River. This location is 230km (140 miles) east of Johannesburg near Middelburg. We will again be hunting the impala. Fishing and bird hunting competition are being added for 2008 event. Game viewing, shopping and sightseeing will be made available for anyone interested. The details of the 2008 event will be sent out shortly with the registration forms.

 Wheelchair Distribution

The first 550 wheelchairs have all been distributed.  We have had an overwhelming demand for the chairs.  You can view pictures of the distribution on our website. We are in the process of ordering another 550 wheelchairs, and 550 will be ordered shortly there after. Please contact Phil Rank or Hector Kitscha with any new requests for wheelchairs.

 First Annual USA Fundraiser

The pheasant hunt and dinner held on September 28, 2007 was a huge success. Both a tower shoot and conventional pheasant hunt were offered. We had approximately 30 hunters participating and 60 people attending the banquet. Those attending opened their checkbooks for the OSHC Foundation, Inc.; we raised over $25,000 for the kids of South Africa. The OSHC Foundation, Inc. thanks all those who helped, donated and/or attended the event. Plans have started for the second annual USA fundraiser for the fall of 2008.

 Need Donations!!

It was great to have a successful fundraiser in September, but the downside was it depleted the club’s list of auction items.  We need your help in securing items for the upcoming events. Please let us know of any items you would like to donate or outfitters who are willing to support our mission. Please contact Hector Kitscha, Dave Bahl or Phil Rank.

 New OSHC Foundation, Inc. DVD

A new DVD has been produced highlighting the many projects the One Shot Hunt Club is supporting through the OSHC Foundation, Inc. It is a very moving presentation. The DVD is an excellent tool for anyone promoting our organization. If you are interested in getting a copy please contact Hector Kitscha. There is a $5.00 charge for production of the DVD and shipping. A special thanks to Hector and David Kitscha for this production.

 Mission Projects

Hector visited the Boshof Day Care in December.  We have been supporting this school for a number of years. Hector delivered Beanie Babies and socks to the school during his visit. We also have committed $1,200 a year to help them financially. The OSHC is working with Howard Knott to continue support of the country schools in the Tshipise area.  One project is helping to build a library, computer room and office. We plan on visiting the Tshipise schools in July of 2008. The Executive Committee is again asking our good friends in Africa to identify projects that the OSHC Foundation, Inc. can support in southern Africa.

OSHC Planning Meeting – July 13, 2007 (From Summer Newsletter)

This meeting originally was planned to develop a five year plan for the OSHC SA by a planning committee so directed by BOD of the OSHC SA at the annual event at Tshipise. Shortly after the July 13th meeting was convened, it was apparent that any plan developed for the OSHC SA was primarily dependent upon the plans and directions of the OSHC Foundation, Inc. The dependency is due to the United States entity being the primary source of funding for programs undertaken by both the OSHC SA and the OSHC Foundation, Inc. Those in attendance were Dave Bahl, Jack Hagen, Hector Kitscha, Dave Tallman and Phil Rank. It was decided to make the meeting a formal OSHC Foundation meeting and use this meeting to develop a five year plan. New vision and mission statements were written:

·         Vision – The OSHC Foundation provides for humanitarian programs in southern Africa via support from corporations, individuals, sporting communities and other foundations.

·         Mission – The mission of the OSHC Foundation is to identify and directly support specific needs within southern Africa such as:

§         Children’s basic life requirements.

§         School and educational requirements.

§         Native community requirements.

§         Requirements of selected individuals who lack the resources to provide for themselves.  Individuals will be selected regardless of race, creed or gender.

The group wrote objectives for the OSHC Foundation, Inc. The attendees discussed and proposed the structure of the OSHC Foundation Board of Directors which included the make up of the board, election of board members, and an increased number of board members. Dave Tallman was nominated and approved as a Foundation BOD at the meeting. t was recommended to set new categories (level of giving) of Foundation membership:

            - Beacon          Members donating $10,000 US or above.

            - Major            Members donating from $5,000 to $9,999 US.

            - Leadership    Members donating from $3,000 to $4,999 US.

            - Contributor   Members donating from $1,000 to $2,999 US

            - Donor            Members donating from $100 to $999 US.

It was an excellent planning meeting by the group, but there is a need to further expand the subjects discussed at the meeting. It is expected this will happen when the new board is put in place.

 Wheelchair Distribution

As previously stated in the spring newsletter, there has been an enormous need met by the wheelchair project.  We continue to get requests for wheelchairs.  These requested are reviewed and approved for distribution, if merited.  Because of the success of this project we are considering another shipment of 550 chairs.  A special recognition must go the Hector for his many hours of work getting this project underway, getting the shipment released from South African customs and participation in the distribution.  Also, a special thanks  to Helen and Tracey McDonald for the work done in getting the shipment released and now managing the distribution of the wheelchairs from their South African farm.

Please contact Phil Rank or Hector Kitscha with any new requests for wheelchairs.

 Mission Projects

The Executive Committee has compiled a spreadsheet of all the projects we have completed and are presently involved with as of July 31, 2007.  There are 42 projects with an estimated total value of donations of $315,067.00.  We have done well in the seven years of the OSHC existence.

Let us know if anyone has any new mission projects.  The OSHC Foundation, Inc. has funds available and is willing to take on additional projects.

The group wrote objectives for the OSHC Foundation, Inc.   The attendees discussed and proposed the structure of the OSHC Foundation Board of Directors which included the make up of the board, election of board members, increasing number of board members and to be in place by December 1, 2007.  Dave Tallman was nominated and approved as a Foundation BOD at the meeting.

It was recommended to set new categories (level of giving) of Foundation membership:

            - Beacon          Members donating $10,000 US or above.

            - Major            Members donating from $5,000 to $9,999 US.

            - Leadership    Members donating from $3,000 to $4,999 US.

            - Contributor   Members donating from $1,000 to $2,999 US

            - Donor            Members donating from $100 to $999 US.

It was an excellent planning meeting by the group, but there is a need to further expand the subjects discussed at the meeting.  It is expected this will happen when the new board is put in place December 1, 2007.

 OSHC News Articles

There have been a number of newspaper and magazine articles written about the One Shot Hunt Club of South Africa.  It is great to see the good press and recognition.  Here is a list of some of the articles.

·         PHASA had an article in their latest publication on the OSHC.  It was written by Marianna Louwrens of PHASA, she attend our 2006 event.  The article briefly explained who we are and with most of the article telling about our mission projects.

·         The African Indaba magazine asked Howard Knott for an article about our organization.  Jack Hagen wrote an excellent article and sent it off to Howard in May.

·         There were a couple of news articles in the Polokwane paper on the wheelchair distribution and explaining the good things the OSHC is doing.

·         The African Hunter will be publishing an article written by Michael Core.  It is nice article about his elephant hunt.

 Wheelchairs!!

The 550 wheelchairs have arrived, cleared customs and are in the process of being distributed.  There is an enormous demand for wheelchairs throughout South Africa.  Hector Kitscha and Phil Rank spent three weeks working with different groups in the distribution of the wheelchairs.

·         Boshof Area – With the help of Francois and Sandy de Wet, we distributed 25 wheelchairs at a nursing home.  People from the surrounding area were brought to the home by a local society that helped in transporting the recipients and distributing the wheelchairs.  Additional 150 wheelchairs are being pickup by Francois who will be a distribution point for others and future requests (S. J. Mostert 10, Sparrow Handicap School 10, Hunter’s Namibia Safaris 30).

·         Polokwane (Pietersburg) Area – With the support of Tracey McDonald, we journeyed to Siloe Workshop for the Blind to distribute 10 wheelchairs.  It was a very moving experience of giving the ten recipients mobility that they did not have previous to our arrival.  Also wheelchairs have been distributed to a few people in need in Polokwane.

·         Tshipise Area – Howard Knott has taken the responsibility for distribution in the Tshipise area.  He has 10 wheelchairs for distribution.

·         Sekororo Kingdom (Edeni Lodge) – Johan Roets hosted us at Edeni and he educated us about the needs of the Kingdom.  Johan had originally received 50 wheelchairs and while we were there he picked up another 20 chairs.  A formal distribution was made for 6 recipients whom the King attended with many of the villages’ mayors.  We then visited an AIDS clinic and distributed wheelchairs for the clinics use.  The remainder of the day was spent going to the villages and distributing wheelchairs to individuals.  We went to their homes and saw what a difference a wheelchair can have in their lives.

 One Shot Hunt 2007

The seventh annual event was held at Forever Resorts Tshipise on April 22nd through April 25th 2007.  Due to a number of late cancellations the attendance was low this year.  The event support from Forever Resorts was outstanding, their management and staff did everything possible to meet our needs.

The rifle range and competition under Jack Hagen’s and the resorts excellent supervision was a fun and a safe morning.

The hunt competition was again a two day event.  Teams were split so some hunted on Monday and some on Tuesday.  Only three impala were shot.  There were many reasons for the low kill but I am not going there.  Congratulations to the winning team of Dave Tallman and Elmarie Minnaar, a very skilled hunting duo.

The banquet was held on Tuesday night. The food was outstanding and the facility for the banquet and auction was super.  The banquet was well attended by local people.  Dave Tallman was the auctioneer and help raise over $8,000.

The following awards were announced:

·         A Special Recognition for supporting the One Shot Hunt Club- SA was given to Helen McDonald.  Thanks Helen!

·         President’s Service Award to Donald Trizzino for his support of hearing aids program

·         President’s Cup was awarded to Ron Nienas

·         PH of the Year  is John Vannenburg

·         Rifle Competition won by Jack Hagen

·         Hunting Competition won by Dave Tallman and Elmarie Minnaar

 Tshipise School Visits

The number of country schools the OSHC-SA is supporting in the Tshipise area is now three.  It is great to see the children and their teachers each year.  At the first school, Howard and Phil were presented handmade baskets in appreciation of our support.  At this school we presented a computer to the head master which we had promised at our last visit. She was very surprised and was so happy to get it.  The new school we visited this year was very poor and in need of supplies and shoes.

We had some great donations to help the South African children.  Michael Core donated a $1000 worth of school books and some toys, thanks Michael.  The toys were distributed to a day care in the Sekororo Kingdom; the school had no toys for the children so they were much appreciated.  Forever Resorts donated the mealy meal again this year for all the schools.  Bob Viden brought shoes; there is a great need for shoes which we need to address for 2008.  School supplies from the OSHC were handed out at each school.  We also are supporting a soccer team for the village of Smokey.  A soccer field has been graded, league entrance fees paid and uniforms bought.  The uniforms were presented during our visit.

Good news!  There is another country school in the area that would like our support.  We plan on adding the fourth country school in 2008.

For those who were unable to attend the 2007 hunt or those who attend, there is excellent information on our web-site about this year’s events which includes pictures and newspaper articles.  The web-site is www.oneshot-huntclubsa.com

 Other Mission Projects Visited

Beef Master School – Hector Kitscha and Phil Rank had the opportunity to visit the Beef Master School.  The computer lab has had an upgrade.  The Board of Education has funded new computers and a server for the school.  The students are learning their computer skills on new HP personal computers.  The donation of a few years ago has brought results.  The old lap tops are again being put to good use; the Beef Master School teachers are now using them to assist in their classrooms.

Boshof Day Care – The small day care we have been supporting in Boshof was visited.  The center now has two class rooms full of children.  We delivered school supplies and a metric ton of mealy meal to the center.  We also passed out the hats supplied by Sandy and Larry Carlson.

Polokwane Phonak Hearing Centre – Hector and Phil were unable to schedule a meeting at the clinic when in Polokwane.  After our departure Tracey McDonald attended a fitting of hearing aids at the centre.

Forever Resorts – The Tshipise Resort has volunteered to set up a computer training facility at the resort to train teachers from the area and resort staff lacking computer skills.  The One Shot Hunt Club will be supplying the computers.

Sekororo Day Care – Hector and Phil visited a day care center in the Sekororo Kingdom that had many needs.  We supplied a metric ton of mealy meal which was graciously accepted.  Edeni Lodge matched our donation with food of equal value for the day care center.

 Namibia

A trip was made to Namibia to follow up on the possibility to hold a future One Shot competition in Namibia.  Hector and I had met with Hunter’s Namibia Safaris at Reno.  We were invited to visit their hunting area which is an hour drive east of the Windhoek Airport.  The animal to hunt would be the gemsbok.  Hunter’s Namibia Safaris have two excellent lodges and plentiful game.  This location for a One Shot Hunt event can accommodate eight hunters and four non-hunters.

We also discussed with Marina Lamprecht, one of the owners, of Hunter’s Namibia Safaris, of how we could help the school children in Namibia.  She took us to meet the Minister of Education, Hon. Nangolo Mbumba where the OSHC’s purpose and mission was discussed.  He suggested two schools that we could support.

No decisions have been made as of this date on actions we will be taking on an OSH event or mission projects in Namibia.

 New Zealand Hunt

The New Zealand hunt for red stag has been temporarily cancelled for 2007.  There has not been enough interest for staging the hunt this year.

Fall 2007 Fund Raiser in the USA

A fund raiser is being planned for early October.  Very shortly notices will be sent out announcing date and location.  It will be a pheasant hunt in the Milwaukee area.  It will also include evening festivities; dinner, gun raffles and auctions.

Foundation Projects Update The shipment of 550 wheelchairs was delayed due to getting the approval for importation into South Africa. Some of the accessories air pump, wrench and patches were questioned. The good news is the import permits have now been issued. The shipment is ready and shortly will be on its way to South Africa.

We will be adding a third school in the Tshipise area, the Kharivha School. Last year there was a visiting school at the second school we visited. The administrator for this school, Mr. Malan Tshitaudzi wrote me a letter requesting we include his school.

Auction Item – Shrimp in South Carolina Glen Williamson offered a unique auction item last year. He hosted a two day shrimp outing from his home in Pawleys Island, SC. Hector and Phil bought the item and headed for the coast of South Carolina; a new experience for both. We soon discovered what southern hospitality is, thanks to Glen, his wife Liz and friends Cotton and Doc. Glen is a shrimp expert and demands his crew to meet a very high standard. We were up to the challenge and got our limit both days, a 48 quart cooler full of shrimp per day. Thanks Glen for the donation and a great experience.

      One Shot Hunt 2006

The sixth annual One Shot Hunt-SA was held on April 23rd through April 26th 2006 at Aventura Resort Tshipise.  The hunters and guests enjoyed the great hospitality offered by the resort.  On Monday night we were treated to cookout in the bush.  After the cookout, we returned to the banquet hall for a live and silent auction.  Tuesday night was the formal banquet.  There was an excellent dinner, followed by awards, speeches and auctions.  The live auctions were under the direction of Bucky Loch.  He did a great job, thanks Bucky.  The event ended on Wednesday with the school visits.  The school visits will be highlight later in the newsletter.

Howard Knott hosted the competition at his hunting area Greater Kuduland where the competitors hunted impala.  There were only two successful teams this year.  The winning team, David Kitscha and Chuck Porter set a new record for completing the hunt.  They did it in six (6) minutes!  This year there was competition with rifles, handguns and archery, both bows and crossbows.

2006 OSHC Board of Director’s Meeting

The Board of Directors met on April 23, 2006 at the OSH Event in Tshipise.  The meeting was called to order by Hector Kitscha in Larry Carlson’s absent.  The first item of business was introducing the new president, Phil Rank.  There were two guests present: Andre Prinsloo, the One Shot Hunt club accountant and Marianna Louwrens, who represents PHASA.  New officer nominations were: Dave Bahl as President Elect for 2008-2010; Craig Dear as East US Regional Vice President; Michael Core as West US Vice President; and Neville Cunningham as vice President for New Zealand.  All nominations were approved.  Craig and Michael were also made Directors.

The financial report was presented by Andre through June of 2005.  The One Shot Hunt Club is now financially sound with assets to be used to promote the club and meeting our mission goals.  The financial turn around can be credited to Jack Hagen, Howard Knott and the McDonalds’.  The report was approved.

Subjects discussed at the meeting:

o     We are working on a new brochure; African Sporting Gazette has offered to help with the design and printing.

o     Discussion was held on the number of hunters and guests we can accommodate at our present location.  It is possible to have 24-30 hunters using only Greater Kuduland; and could be increased to 50-60 hunters if other surrounding hunt areas are used.

o     The role of the OSHC Foundation Donation Committee was discussed.  The committee is challenged to find worthwhile projects to meet our mission.  Some of the current projects, wheelchairs, hearing aids, medical supplies, computers and schools were discussed.

o     Next years location and date for the OSH event was set.  It will be held at Tshipise Resort on April 22 through 25, 2007.

o     Special hunts for One Shot Hunt Club were discussed.  These would not replace the annual event.

 One Shot Hunt 2007

The One Shot Hunt Club has elected to return to Tshipise Resort for the seventh annual One Shot event.  It will be held on April 22nd through 25th 2007.  The competitors will again hunt the impala.  We would like to increase the number of participants in 2007.  It is our goal to have a least 30 hunters.  We are soliciting each member’s help, hunters and associates, to find hunters to participate at 2007 event.  It is a great location and an area where other hunts are available from some great outfitters.  Make plans early for the 2007 event.  Any questions for yourself or a potential participant can be forwarded to Hector Kitscha 800-728-5301 or Phil Rank 608 296 1949.

 School Visits

On April 26th we made our traditional visit to the schools that the OSHC is supporting in the area.  The schools visited are the same on as we supported last year.  All the attending hunters and guests traveled to the schools.  We distributed shoes, books, school supplies, clothes, soccer balls and mealy meal at both schools.  The Aventura Resort supplied all the mealy meal, over 300 bags for the schools visited.  We ran low on supplies at the second school because there were additional students that came for the day, anticipating our visit.

The first visited at the village of Smokey school we also dedicated their new library.  The OSHC Foundation paid for the roof.  We also bought and delivered furniture and shelves for the library during our visit.  While there we the administrator of the school requested a computer which we supplied.  Howard Knott’s daughter will be checking out the computer and supporting the school with training and set up.

It was a moving experience to see these kids and their administrators so appreciative.  The children and some of the ladies from the communities performed for us.  The speakers at both schools spoke of the friendship they have with us Americans.  It was good to hear and know that we are spreading goodwill as American hunters.

Thanks Howard for all your support working with us and the schools.

 Beefmaster School

In 2004 we help set up a computer lab at the Beefmaster School which was a joint venture with Aventura Resort in Christiana.  Aventura set up the network and OSHC supplied the computers.  A report from the school principle, Albert Van Zyl indicates the program is a success.

 Hearing Aids

Hector and Phil had the opportunity to visit the Andra Bester Audiology Clinic in Polokwane before the One Shot Hunt.  An additional ten hearing aids were given to the clinic.  There were three children and two adults fitted with hearing aids.  The three children were from the same family.  One adult was an 86 year old man who was very appreciative to receive the hearing aids.  The other adult was a 58 year old lady who had both hearing and sight difficulties.

There also was a two year boy present with his parents during our visit.  He was deaf since birth and was selected for a cochlear implant.  The OSHC has donated $2,000.00 to a fund that is set up to help pay for the operation.

 Corporate Support

The One Shot Hunt Club is fortunate to have the support of corporate America.  Each year Dave Tallman, Chairman of the Industrial Relations Committee solicits the support of many people and corporations to help meet our mission.  This year he has collected over $7,000.00.  Corporate support is much appreciated:

o       Eaton Corporation lets us use their plant in Lincoln IL to stage our annual ship to South Africa.

o       FEDEX picks up and makes the shipment to South Africa at no charge to the OSHC.

o       Used computers from corporate America are being put to good use in South Africa.  We could use could use more as the school administrators are realizing the need to introduce the children to the computer and communication age and the value of the teaching aids and research materials.

 New Zealand Hunt July 2007

Another special hunt is being planned for One Shot Hunters.  It is not an Alabama whitetail hunt; it is New Zealand red deer hunt.  Neville Cunningham will host the hunt in July 2007.  So mark your calendars for a trip to New Zealand in 2007.  This is not a replacement for our annual One Shot Hunt but an opportunity for make an additional hunt with some of your hunting friends.  If interested, contact Hector Kitscha.

 NRA Convention

The national NRA convention was held in Milwaukee on May 19th through May 21st 2006.  The convention was well attended.  Our booth was located in the “outfitters” area which had heavy convention traffic.  There were many who stopped which gave us an opportunity to explain our organization and handout information about the club and OSHC Foundation.  A few associate members were sighed up and there we others showing an interest in attending a future event.  We also solicited two dove hunts from outfitters at the convention, value $4,000.00.

 Wheelchairs for South Africans

The One Shot Hunt-SA will receive 550 wheelchairs, delivered to Durban thanks to Hector’s work with a charitable organization from California.  The OSHC-SA is getting these free of charge.  The shipment should be arriving in South Africa by early August.  Please send any wheelchair requests to a board member or directly to Donation Committee by using donation request form.

 One Shot Hunt 2006

Our Special Organization

As I write this newsletter, I decided it is time look back and reminisce about our club, the One Shot Hunt Club – South Africa. It all started south of Kimberley in 2001, we hunted the Springbok and found an experience that we wanted to repeat. The competition is great, the meeting of old and new friends is nice and an excuse to return to Africa is always a plus. Many have attended all six!  Why, one may ask? I feel it is the total experience one has spending three days at the One Shot Hunt and realizing our club’s mission. The mission is helping the Children of Africa. We have done well collecting and raising funds. We have established the OSHC Foundation, Inc both in the USA and South Africa which allows us to be active in procuring and dispersing funds and goods where needed. Since Kimberley in 2001, we have come a long way in meeting our mission. I always look forward to the Wednesday after the hunt when the group visits the schools and has an opportunity to see the results of our club efforts. It is the time for OSHC membership to see results and realize why our club started and why our club will continue.

 One Shot Hunt 2006

Plans are near completion for the sixth annual One Shot Hunt-SA scheduled for April 23rd through April 26th 2006. The event is again being held at the Aventura Resort Tshipise and hunting will take place at surrounding game farms. The animal for the 2006 competition is the impala.  If you are interested in learning more about the resort, check their website at: http://www.aventura.co.za/tshipise/tshipise.htm. The resort is located north of Polokwane (Pietersburg), SA. The skilled hunters will pursue the impala with bow, crossbow, hand gun and rifle. There will also be activities for those who are not participating in the hunts. Wednesday will be mission day; we will be visiting the schools we are supporting.

 PHASA Involvement

PHASA (Professional Hunters Association of South Africa) has shown an interest in our club because of our work with the African schools and community. PHASA is supporting our activities in South Africa. The Secretary of PHASA will be attending One Shot Hunt events in Tshipise.

 White Tail One Shot Hunt

There has been talk for years about having a one shot deer hunt. It came to reality in Alabama in December 2005. It was held at Bent Creek Lodge in Jachin, Alabama. The hunt occurred December 16th through 18th. The hunters saw deer but none of trophy size. Phil Rank shot the only buck which barely met the minimum; he therefore won first animal shot and biggest buck. At the awards banquet he was presented with two knives. One was auctioned off and the proceeds went to OCHC Foundation, Inc. There are plans for another special hunt; could it be New Zealand? We will keep you posted.

Manning the One Shot Hunt Club Booth at SCI Events

Many of us have been attending SCI events promoting the One Shot Hunt Club-SA. Hector did a great job representing us at the SCI’s 34th Annual Hunter’s Convention in Reno on January 18-21, 2006. The importance of getting our name recognized continues to be a challenge for our club. Our presence at these events does give us a chance to meet people and has started to give us name recognition. We are open to suggestions for promotional ideas and welcome volunteers to promote OSHC-SA.

OSHC Booth at NRA Convention – May 19th thru 21st 2006

NRA is holding their convention in Milwaukee on May 19th through 21st 2006. We have been provided a space at this convention which has a potential of drawing 100,000 plus NRA members. It will give us an opportunity to promote the One Shot Hunt Club-SA to a new audience.  Come down and join us at the booth. We have a great time at these events meeting old friends and promoting the club.

OSHC Dinner in Conjunction with the NRA Convention

A dinner is being planned to promote the One Shot Hunt Club during the NRA Convention weekend.  We plan on inviting membership and friends to an evening of fun. It will be a fund raiser as well as a membership drive dinner. We will be sending the details of the gala event in the very near future.

 Wheelchairs for South Africans

The One Shot Hunt-SA will receive 550 wheelchairs, delivered to Durban thanks to Hector’s work with a charitable organization from California. The OSHC-SA is getting these free of charge. This is great news for the club and the people in need of the wheelchairs in South Africa. The wheelchairs should arrive in Durban in approximately 90 days. These will require about 20 minutes for assembling. We need to plan for this delivery. Please bring your ideas or send them with a board member to the Board of Directors Meeting at Tshipise. If the club can demonstrate and document that it is able to successfully distribute these wheelchairs to needy Africans, additional shipments of wheelchairs can be arranged.

 Hearing Aids for South Africans

More good news! The One Shot Hunt Club-SA is getting another shipment of hearing aids. These are available immediately. A distribution plan is also needed for this generous gift.

 Volume IX                                                                                                                                             Spring 2005

 One Shot Hunt 2005

The One Shot Hunt Club South Africa hosted its fifth annual event on June 19th through June 22nd at Aventura Tshipise Resort near Polokwane (Pietersburg), South Africa.  It was the first year the group’s one shot competition hunted impala.  There were two categories, one for bow hunters and one for rifle.  The bow hunting arrangements were unique, the blinds were so well designed that many animals presented themselves at 20 yards or less for the bow hunters.  John Kitscha and John Demopoulos were able to get their impala with one arrow each in 40 minutes total time.  The rifle competition was won by Larry Carlson and Peter Knott; their total time was 33 minutes.  Plans are to expand the competition next year for pistol shooters; plans are to allow a monopod for this competition.

There were teams from New Zealand, South Africa and North America competing.  This was the second year we have had representation from New Zealand.  This year’s New Zealand team became a main attraction at the One Shot event.  They created a superb atmosphere of humor, laughter and lasting friendships.  We look forward to their return to the event in the very near future.    This team of Neville Cunningham and Bert How shared the President’s Cup and Neville won the shooting competition.

All participants and guests had a great time at the new location. Many enjoyed the game drives and some pursued baboons.  The auction was great, with Larry being the auctioneer.  He did an outstanding job.  Larry probably has discovered a new career.

One Shot Hunt 2005 Special Awards

Larry Carlson awarded two Members of the Year plaques.  These went to Jack Hagen and Hector Kitscha for the many hours of work each spent this past year on behalf of the club.

Jack also was presented with an additional award.  If you are interested what this great award is, please give Jack a call.  We are sure he will be happy to discuss the award with you.

A Special Thanks to South Africa

We would like to thank Howard Knott, Sandy McDonald and Henk Odendaal for the excellent arrangements made for the participants stay in South Africa.  The meals were superb and the overall arrangements and service was excellent.  Monday evening was a memorable night, dinner was enjoyed in the bush next to a 3000 plus year old Baobab Tree.  The resort did an outstanding job building a special rifle range with several targets at different ranges. There was also excellent laundry service.  Well done Henk, for all the effort you put into the nice arrangements for the One Shot Hunt Club.

 OSHC Foundation, Inc. Mission

School Visits

The tradition of helping schools in the area where the event was being held continued at Tshipise.  On June 22, 2005 members of the OSHC organizations visited two schools near the Aventura Resort to present donated items.  These schools were in need of every item you can imagine.  The items distributed by the club to both schools were:

School supplies – Pencils, pens, paper, ruler and pencil sharpener.

Shoes

Encyclopedias – Set for both schools.

Mealy Meal – 2 and ½ kilograms for each child.

Three soccer balls

Two more schools will be visited after July 18, 2005 by local club members to present to those schools school supplies, shoes and mealy meal.

Hearing Aids

The One Shot Hunt Club SA launched a special program to donate hearing aids to poor children with hearing impairment.  On this trip to Africa, members of the OSHC delivered hearing aids worth R330,000.  Five of these hearing aids were delivered to    Andra Bester, Audiologist and Speech Therapist for needy children to improve their hearing.  The clinic involved will continue to identify children in need of the hearing aids.  The club will furnish hearing aids to the clinic as children in need are identified.  We hope to continue this program indefinitely.  Special thanks go to Donald Trizzino for his involvement in obtaining the hearing aids.

 One Shot Hunt 2005 Financials

Jack Hagen, our Financial Officer reports a very successful event this year.  Jack states, “With a net income to-date of over $13,800 USD, this year’s event was by far the most financially successful OSHC event that we have conducted during our five years of operation.  The OSHC SA should now be in good financial position to fund selected programs supporting the school children and communities and to prepare for next year’s event.  Thank you all for your support which was critical for the success of this event.”  Jack also stated if we sell additional auction items, this amount will increase which will open additional opportunities to help the children.

Meeting with Special Limpopo Province Minister

A meeting was held On June 15th on the McDonald farm with Mr. Benny Boshielo to describe the mission of the One Shot Hunt Club and what we would like to do in the Limpopo Province to help the schools.  The agenda of the Province Minister is to encourage businesses in the Limpopo Province to help the communities and provide employment for the local people.

The attendees for the One Shot Hunt Club were; Larry and Sandy Carlson, Jack Hagen, Hector Kitscha and Peta Selby.  The attendees representing Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism were: Benny Boshielo, Molebatsi Masedi, Tmapelo Matlala and Klurominlsi Matrlse.

Hector Kitscha welcomed the attendees and explained the mission of the OSHC SA and some of the clubs activities during the five years of our existence.

Mr. Boshielo thanked the OSHC SA attendees for their interest in supporting needy South Africans and inquired what they could do to help our programs.  Discussions by the group indicated several areas where it was felt the Limpopo government might be able to assist. The major areas of potential support identified were:

-         Assisting in clearing the forthcoming shipment of donated items through RSA customs.

-         Assisting in identifying the specific types of medical and school supplies which represent the greatest needs.

-         Assisting in identifying the appropriate recipients of computers to maximize their value to the local school systems.

Mr. Boshielo indicated that he would discuss our request with representatives from the Limpopo Department of Education.

 OSHC Foundation, Inc

It is great to see the results from those soliciting and those giving to the foundation.  With these funds, we are able to expand our mission of helping the children in Africa.  The Foundation would like our associates in Africa (and those in the US) to begin identifying appropriate projects.  It is proposed we activate a “Donations Committee” which is charged with soliciting donation requests, reviewing the requests and approving the expenditures.  The “Request for OSHC Foundation, Inc. Donations” attached to this newsletter e-mail is to be used for any and all donation requests for both the OSHC SA and the OSHC Foundation, Inc.

OSHC- SA Board of Director Meeting of June 19th

The following are key subjects discussed at the annual board meeting:

-         Financial issues resolved were: approving the moving of the banking account from Kimberly to Polokwane; using wire money transfers from the USA for large expenditures; hiring an accountant for South African financial work such as taxes and other accounting requirements.

-         Donation Issues

- Shipment of donated items from the US is at an Eaton Corporation plant near ready for shipment.  It now totals 40 pallet loads.  Included in this shipment are computers, medical supplies, school supplies, text books, shoes and other goods.  These items have all been donated by US companies and individuals or have been purchased by the OSHC Foundation, Inc.  This shipment is again being arranged with Federal Express.  The shipment will be delivered to the McDonald farm in Polokwane.

- A therapist clinic with a great need for computers and medical supplies was reported by Paul Phelan.  He indicated that lap top computers are one of the greatest needs of mission hospitals.  The BOD indicated the need to pursue getting more computers to distribute.

- International Aid, the organization where we procured the medical supplies was discussed by Larry Carlson.  The organization receives a wide range of food, medicines, medical supplies and school supplies donated by US corporations.  A large quantity of medical and school supplies were purchased by the Foundation and are included in the shipment being staged at Eaton Corporation.

- The Beef Master School near Kimberly has provided a facility for the training center which was equipped with computers we donated last year.  The Aventura Christiana Resort provided the networking.  Two TV companies visited the school and filmed the facility.

            -    Administrative Issues

- Custom knives for registrants to the 2006 OSH is being proposed.  These knives are made by the Rapid River Knife Company, an associate member of the OSHC SA.  These knives will be custom laser engraved for the OSHC SA.

- It was agreed that the hospitality of the Aventura Tshipise Resort warranted holding the 2006 event again at this resort.

            -     Board of Directors Changes

Howard Knott was nominated and approved as a new member of the OSHC SA Board of Directors.  The following were removed from the Board of Directors: Phillip de Bruyn, Phalm Els and Jacob de Wet.

PHASA Meeting with Hector

PHASA (Professional Hunters Association South Africa) met with Hector on two occasions, June 27 and 28, 2005.  They discussed the various ways the two organizations can work together.  PHASA is very pleased with our work, and in the future PHASA publications will include information about the OSHC SA and its programs.

Volume VIII                                                                                                                                       Winter 2005

 One Shot Hunt 2005

Plans are well underway for the One Shot Hunt Club’s 2005 event at Aventura Resort Tshipise.  The event will begin with arrival on Sunday, June 19th and departure after school visits on Wednesday, June 22nd.  The location change will give new and old competitors some new challenges.  This year the animal being stalked is the impala.  There is also a new one shot competition category; it is a one shot bow hunt.  Attendees will be able to compete in both the bow hunt and the rifle hunt.  The location change will also give everyone, shooters and guests an opportunity to see a different part of South Africa.  Plans are to have a photo tour to Krueger Park and shopping trip to Zimbabwe.  The registration form is on the web site, its time to make your reservations for a great competition and vacation.

 Airline Reservations

Custom Travel has advised that reservations are tight for travel in June.  If you are planning to attend the One Shot event, Custom Travel is advising you to make your reservations as soon as possible.

Auction Items for the 2005 Activities

There is a need for small auction items for the two evening banquets.  These are the kind of items that can be used as blind and Chinese auction items.  Contact Sandy or Larry Carlson at woodticklodge@aol.com or by phone at 231-744-5523 with your donated items.

 Auction Items on the Web

This year we have worked hard, special thanks to Hector, to have some great items for auction.  You will be receiving the list as a special e-mail communication, and it is also on the web site.  Please note you can start your bidding now!  Bidding has already begun on several of the items.  You do not have to attend the One Shot Hunt to participate in this auction.  The rules for bidding are spelled out for you.  Let’s hear some bidding!

Donations for the Children of Africa

Just a reminder there always is a need for the Children of Africa.  We can always use more shoes and school supplies.  There are two recent events that merit mentioning about giving to the children.

Hearing AidsA friend of Hector Kitscha from Cleveland, OH, Donald Trizzino is giving $18,000 of hearing aids.  Many of these are of the latest technology.  Donald, hopefully will be able to attend this years event and help with children who are in need of hearing aids.

Medical Supplies A fellow SCI member at Larry Carlson’s SCI chapter has suggested supplying some medical supplies to the children we are supporting in Africa.  Through an organization called International Aid, they can supply us with some basic first aid supplies.  This would include only non-prescription drugs and other first aid items.  Larry will be meeting with International Aid in April.

 OSHC Presence at SCI

A number of OSHC members have been attending SCI functions to promote our organization.  We have manned the booth with a One Shot Hunt Club banner, video and handouts with a story to tell.  It has been a great opportunity to prompt our club and reach to a wider audience than we have in the past.  We have had booths at following SCI chapters:

Badgerland Chapter at Madison WI                  Michigan Chapter at Grand Rapids, MI

NE Wis Chapter at Green Bay, WI                   Lake Shore Chapter at Muskegon, MI

Wisconsin Chapter at Milwaukee, WI   Mid Mich Chapter at Mount Pleasant, MI

Lansing Chapter at Lansing, MI                        SE Mich Bow Hunting at Livonia, MI

We also shared a space with Custom Travel at the Reno Convention.  If any member is interested in promoting the OSHC in their area please contact the President’s Office.  We can supply materials for the event as well as an eight foot banner.

 Jack Hagen, the Author

One of our charter members, Jack Hagen, for one of his projects for retirement, has become an author.  I have read the book; it is interesting how Jack has used his hunting experiences, knowledge of firearms and politics to write this novel.  Even though I am not a New York Times critic, I recommend this as a must read.   In Jack’s own words:

The Zambezi Incident

By Jack Hagen

The Zambezi Incident is an adventure novel set in current events. Its main character is an African professional hunter who has unwittingly become the target for al-Qaeda terrorists. This is the first full length book written by Jack Hagen, a charter member of the OSHC SA.

The Zambezi Incident begins with a big game safari in the African bush which ends in a deadly encounter with al-Qaeda smugglers. This story has its foundations in al-Qaeda’s widespread involvement in the trade of Africa’s “blood diamonds” and in a worldwide diamond market which is indifferent to its sources.

To find out more about this thrilling new novel visit Jack’s new website at www.JackGHagen.com. This website has the first chapter of the novel as a sample and provides information about how it can be ordered.

 Associate Membership Drive

Remember the Associate Drive is underway!  The drive will run until November 30, 2005.  It is important for our organization to expand its membership to meet the growing needs of the children.  Our associate member count is now over thirty.  Prizes for the most members signed are:

            1st prize – 5 day hunt at Hunter’s Rock Safaris for 50” + kudu

            2nd prize – A Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun

3rd prize – 1200W Briggs and Stratton portable gasoline generator

 One Shot Bow Hunt

There has been numerous bow hunters interested in being involved with the One Shot Hunt Club.  Some have encouraged us to explore the possibility of including a One Shot Bow Hunting competition.  This year plans are to offer a one shot hunt for the archers.  Here is your opportunity to challenge you bow hunting skills, when registering indicate if you plan to compete in the One Shot Bow Hunt.  The rules are:

One Shot Bow Hunt Rules

·    Hunting participants will be divided into teams of two people. You can select and form your own team; however, the team members will be hunting separately.

·      All participants will be hunting from established blinds and will be accompanied by either a PH or a tracker, not another hunter. The blinds will be pre-numbered and assigned to individual hunters by a drawing.

·         The hunt begins at 7:30 AM and ends at 4:00 PM.

·         Only shots which mortally wound an animal with one arrow are counted for score.

·         A missed shot scores as zero. If you fail to release a shot by 4:00 PM. then that also scores as a zero.

·         A wounded animal that can be recovered without releasing another arrow constitutes a hit. If the wounded animal can only be recovered by releasing more arrows then that constitutes a miss. A knife can be used to finish a severely wounded animal without penalty.

·         If the animal that is shot at is missed or wounded and not recovered, that constitutes a miss even if the original arrow happened to kill another animal by accident.

·         If the animal actually killed is of another species than that which is being hunted, that constitutes a miss and the hunter will be responsible for the difference in trophy fee.

·         Both the hunter and the PH or tracker accompanying the hunter will need to keep track of the time when the animal was killed. If the animal was seriously wounded and had to be finished with a knife, the time of the kill is when it was finished with the knife.

·         Remember that the purpose of the hunt is to get an animal with one arrow. Sizes of horns or sex are not critical.

·         The results of the hunt must be reported to the Club President by 5:00 PM of the day of the hunt. Both the hunter and the accompanying PH or tracker must confirm the time when scoring kills were made.

·         A perfect score for a team will be when each kills an animal through releasing a single arrow. In case of two or more teams having two kills, the winning team will be the one which required the least time total to kill both animals.

Example:

Team Alpha – Hunter A killed an animal at 10:30 AM and Hunter B killed an animal at 11:00 AM. The time for the team is 6 hours and 30 minutes.

Team Delta - Hunter D killed an animal at 10:30 AM and Hunter E killed an animal at 12:00 AM. The time for the team is 7 hours and 30 minutes.

·         If no team is successful in killing two animals, the team which kills at least one of the animals being hunted in the least time will be the winner.

OSHC Foundation, Inc.

We are now official in both in South Africa and the United States. The One Shot Hunt Club South Africa is a non-profit, type 21 corporation, chartered in South Africa which is dedicated to support school children in needy African communities. The One Shot Hunt Club South Africa is affiliated with the OSHC Foundation, Inc. which is a USA registered non-profit funded, tax exempt, Section 501 (c) (3) organization. Bank accounts are now established in both countries so we can account for and disperse funds to our mission projects. These two organizations together give us the government recognized status needed for us to be able to provide support to the African children.

Word from the President’s Office

There has been a change in the structure of the president for the OSHC. The past president (Hector), current president (Larry) and president elect (Phil) discussed the responsibilities of the President at an executive meeting in October. Larry and Phil are both overwhelmed by this undertaking and concerned with meeting the expectations of the OSHC. We have certain strengths but not the understanding and contacts of our past president. It was proposed and agreed on that all three will work as one, thus we have created “The Office of the President”. The three will handle daily activities of the club and will schedule a minimum of four annual meetings plus phone and e-mail correspondence needed to accomplish ongoing responsibilities.

Greg Gardner’s Cape Buffalo Hunt

Greg reported that he had a great time on his Mozambique adventure. Greg bid on the cape buffalo hunt donated by Sandy McDonald. He took his brother-in-law David with him (David is a great Wyoming Elk guide.) They both shot excellent cape buffalos. Greg also shot a record reed buck (15 ½ inches), a sable, a bush pig and water buck. David shot a warthog and water buck besides his cape buffalo. Greg said it was extremely hot in Mozambique. He was impressed with the quality and amount of game seen on the hunt.  Greg and David then went to visit Francois where Greg had an opportunity to shoot a tsessebe.

Merry Christmas

It is the holiday season and time to reflect on how lucky and blessed we are to live in a free and bountiful society. Each time I go to Africa and experience the needs of the children I wonder why we are not doing more to help the kids. During this Christmas season let’s all take a time out and think about what one warm blanket or pair of shoes does for these kids. The Foundation is now set up; your donation is tax deductible. You can send your donation to Jack Hagen, check payable to OSHC Foundation, Inc. He will send you a receipt. These are God’s children, are you willing to help cloth and feed them?

Volume VI                                                                                                      Summer 2004

One Shot Hunt 2004

This year’s One Shot Hunt was held at Aventura Resort on August 8 through August 11, 2004. It was well attended, good time was had by all and a great fundraiser for the children of Africa. The auctions and raffle were very successful.

Sunday – August 8

The guests and competitors arrived throughout the day. Those who arrived early were able to attend an excellent seminar on Shot Placement by Paul Phelan. Many went to the shooting range to sight in their rifles and begin the shooting competition. The evening was spent renewing old acquaintances and welcoming new members over cocktails and dinner.

Monday – August 9

The day started with completion of the rifle sight in and shooting competition. Two new competitions were added this year, estimating trophy measurements and distances. At 10:00 AM most hunters opted for a new feature hunt this year, the practice hunt. It gave both new participants and past shooters an opportunity to improve their skills hunting the springbok. Many came back confident on their chances of winning the One Shot competition. The evening activities included reading the “legend of the hunt” and drawing for PH’s and hunting areas. This was followed by an excellent dinner. This year we had a guest auctioneer, Wyatt McBride from New Zealand. He did an excellent job both Monday and Tuesday evenings.

Tuesday – August 10

All hunters were up early and eager to start the One Shot and Past Shooters competition. The Wyoming ranchers, Greg and Jason Gardner were the winning team. The banquet was hosted by our new president, Larry Carlson. He presented the following awards:

President’s Cup                                    Andre van der Westhuizen

PH of the Year                                       Robert Lotze

Shooting Competition                           Glen Williamson

Trophy Judgment                                  Dave Tallman

Distance Judgment                                Werner Boing

Past Shooter Competition                     Glen Williamson and Bill Hawes

One Shot Competition                           Greg Gardner and Jason Gardner

Former president, Hector Kitscha presented a special award, the President Service Award to Dave Tallman. This award was for the work he has done in securing donations, both monetary, material things (computers, books, first aid kits, school supplies) and logistics for the Foundation.  Job well done Dave!

Wednesday – August 11

The highlight for many of the participants is the school visits. We visited the Beefmaster and Boshof Schools. Blankets and corn meal were handed out at both schools. Shoes were also given to the Boshof School.  It is great to see the children perform and be able to meet their teachers. The newsletter will discuss in greater detail our work with schools under School Projects.

Foundation News

The OSHC Foundation, Inc. is now established in the US and functioning to handle requests and releasing funds for projects in South Africa. The officers of the Foundation are Hector Kitscha, President; Phil Rank, Secretary; Jack Hagen, Treasurer; Directors: Dave Bahl, Larry Carlson, Jack Hagen, Hector Kitscha, Phil Rank, and Bob Viden. While in South Africa, Hector and Phil met with our lawyer, Jac N. Coetzer to discuss the status of setting up the non-profit South Africa organization and how best to distribute funds. The South African Foundation has been approved by the government and we will now be opening a bank account to disperse funds for the South Africa requests. A CPA and bookkeeper will be assisting Francois in managing the accounts. It is critical we have good records in order to keep our tax exempt status. The OSHC Foundation, Inc. officers approved a process for approving and dispersing funds.  It is:

1.       A request for a need is sent to the foundation.

2.      The request is approved or denied, if denied the request is returned to requestor with reason.

3.      The dispersal of funds is authorized.

4.      Items for donation are purchased.

5.      Donated items are delivered to recipients.

6.      Receipt of delivery is provided by recipient.

7.      Foundation Treasurer is provided with purchase receipts and receipts of delivery.

School Projects

A large number of the OSHC participants spent Wednesday morning August 11, 2004 visiting the Beefmaster School and Boshof School.  At both schools we were entertained with singing. After speeches of appreciation, we handed out blankets, shoes and corn meal. Many also took the opportunity to visit with the administrators and teachers and visit the classrooms.

Liz Williamson made earlier visits to the Boshof School and a day care in Boshof. Liz is a teacher from South Carolina and volunteered to evaluate the needs of the children at the schools. We are looking forward to her insights as we continue our mission of helping school children of Africa.

The Aventura Resort submitted a formal request to the OSHC Foundation, Inc. The resort is supporting the Beefmaster School by setting up a computer lab. Their plan is to supply a satellite connection, wire the lab for 25 computers and supply technical help from the resort staff. They are asking us for 25 computers, we have approved 15 and will review further needs as the project progresses. This joint venture will give us an opportunity to see how a school is being challenged with this technology.

Hector and Phil met with Frans Kok of the Department of Education in charge of Education Management Information Systems for the Free State. He met with us last year and we released 14 computers for his use. He reported these laptops were given to administrators to train teachers in the schools. A picture was in The Free State Province Department of Education Magazine March 2004 issue stating our donation of computers.

Plans are to release more computers to Frans’ organization. His plans are to set up a training lab and support function in the Boshof area.

Hector, Marcy and Phil visited the Kareehof Preschool Playgroup in Boshof. This preschool is administered by Sophia van Vuuren a retiree using her own resources to help the preschool children. When asked how we could help, she stated her need for a tape/CD player which had broken. That evening a collection was taken, she now has a new player. Plans are to support this worthy project Sophia has started.

Watch for the OSHC Booth

Plans are to be at NE Wisconsin Chapter, Green Bay, WI; Wisconsin Chapter, Milwaukee, WI; Pittsburgh Chapter, Pittsburgh, PA; Grand Rapids Chapter, Grand Rapids, MI. and possibly others. Our goal at these events is to promote the club and our mission. We plan on having registration for shooters and associate memberships. We will also feature hunts for those who have an interest in hunting South Africa, especially for first time hunters.

Visit the Website www.oneshot-huntclubsa.com

The club has an outstanding website; do you access it periodically to keep abreast of what is happening? There is a great amount of information. We have clothes, jewelry, auction hunts and other offerings. You can read past news letters, reference the membership or view some pictures of interest. You can check out the “Website Updates” page to see specifically what pages have recently been changed. The website is the best way to keep current of what is happening in our club, use it!

Have you checked the website for open auction items? Located under “Auctions 2004” you can find some interesting offers. These are a buffalo hunt (AH2), a seven day South African hunt (AH3), a stay at Colona Castle (SAR2) and a black bear hunt (NAH3). You can put in a bid by following the instructions on the web page.

Associate Membership Drive

The One Shot Hunt Club has established a new member category. The Associate Member is for those who have an interest in our mission and events but may not have a desire to compete as a shooter. It is a lifetime membership for $100.00 US. The Associate Member will have the same club privileges as OSHC member. A contest to sign up Associate Members is underway. The goal is to sign up 100 members by December 31, 2005. Prizes will be awarded to the top three for signing the most new associate members.

Notes on the Hunts of 2004

There were a number of first time hunters to South Africa who participated in the One Shot Hunt and also took the opportunity to hunt plains game. Scott Carlson came early with his parents to hunt with Paul Phelan.  He shot ten trophies. Ron Nienas and his son Andrew hunted with Sandveld Safaris. Even with windy conditions, they shot some nice animals of which were an impala, red hartebeest, black wildebeest and springboks. Dave Skorstad went with S. J. Mostert African Safaris, he shot an impala and gemsbuck. He also shot a blesbuck during the practice hunt. DR. John Wynsen hunted at Sandfeld Safaris where he shot red hartebeest, blue wildebeest, gemsbuck, two impalas, grey duiker and two springboks.

There were two hunters, Glen Williamson and Greg Gardner who hunted eland. They both discovered eland may be as big or bigger that a cow but are a challenge to hunt. Both got excellent trophies. Each spent a bit of time stalking and did a bit of shooting to collect their trophies.

One of the highlights of this year’s hunting was a turkey hunt. World famous sportsman, Hector Kitscha sought out to hunt the very rare South African turkey. Accompanying him was international turkey guide Phil Rank and champion turkey caller from South Carolina, Glen Williamson. The evening before the hunt, Phil was awarded a South African PH license in recognition for his skills as an international turkey guide. The group was up at sunrise ready to start the stalk. Also, up at sunrise were a number of PH’s to witness the rare event. The caller called, the guide guided and the hunter shot. The South African turkeys are very smart, the turkey ducked on the first shot. But with all the skills of guiding and with Hector’s hunting prowess the trophy was taken with the second shot. It was an outstanding trophy.

Mission – South African School Children

Marci and Hector made a visit to the Boshof School when they were in South Africa in May. They delivered pitch pipes for the teachers who work with sing groups at the school. With some instruction, the teachers are now using the pipes. The teachers thanked Hector and Marci for the pitch pipes, and indicated that piano would be a fantastic addition to their program. This may be a project opportunity for our group.

Food distribution is proceeding well in the area. Arrangements have been made to distribute food to a church in Boshof which has a program to help those in need. Mealy meal is also being distributed at the Boshof School. Hector and Francois discussed media coverage of the distribution with the principle. He responded by getting three TV stations to cover the distribution. Francois was interviewed in a session which was seven minutes in length. We are trying to get a tape of this coverage.

A shipment will soon leave Pittsburgh for the school children in South Africa. Big thanks to Dave Tallman and his staff for their continuing efforts supplying goods and the logistics of shipping the collected items. He has again come through collecting books and computers. He has also found a supplier of first aid kits; these will be distributed to the school for their use and to give to children in need.  Pittsburgh is the focal point to collect and make shipment to South Africa.

Magazine Features

Since the last newsletter the One Shot Hunt Club–South Africa has been featured in two sporting magazines.

-                     The SCI “Hunters” magazine, a monthly magazine for Wisconsin SCI members, featured a four page article in the May 2004 issue. It is a great article and has pictures about our organization. The editor of the magazine, Dave Ekkebus wrote the following comments on his editorial page: “I guess I must begin with the One Shot Hunt Club. The sportsman or sportswoman who travels to RSA can not help but be drawn to this private endeavor. If you are going to RSA or if you need an excuse to go back this is a project you may want to join.” Hector has copies of the magazine if you are interested in reading the article.

-                     The African Sporting Gazette May 2004 issue has an article about the One Shot Hunt Club and how we help the children of South Africa. This is another article that helps give the club exposure and explains our mission of helping the children.

Associate Membership

The Executive Committee has established a new member category for the OSHC-SA. This member will be called an associate member. This will give people an opportunity to be involved with our mission even though they have not been or do not desire to be a shooter at the One Shot competition. These members will receive an Associated Member Certificate and will be listed as associate members on our website. They will be able to attend and participate in such activities as the banquets, school visits and auctions. Associate members will also have the opportunity to work on club projects.  We have already signed up people who have shown an interest in joining our group. Attached is the document required to become an associate member.

Election of Officers and Directors–One Shot Hunt Club SA

The ballots have been sent out for the new slate of officers and directors for the One Shot Hunt club SA that will assume office on August 1, 2004 and will serve through July 31, 2006. If you haven’t already done so, please return your ballot by July 1, 2004.

US Bank Account

A bank account has been established in the US to handle state side transactions. These are payments for such things as sale items, clothing and other activities being transacted in the US. Checks should be written payable to the One Shot Hunt Club SA. This account is not for Foundation transactions, any foundation payments will be payable to OSHC Foundation, Inc.

Regional and International Vice Presidents

This subject was introduced in the winter newsletter with a list of VP’s. The change in structure of the directors and officers is needed to support our club’s growth. The adding of Regional and International vice presidents will enable us to improve our focus and publicity throughout the world. It will give us a better position for recruitment of teams from various countries, expanding our club publicity, procuring auction donations for hunts worldwide and support for our mission projects.  Here is the updated listing:

Eastern Cape Province – Arthur Rudman

            Gauteng Province – Louis Bekker

KwaZulu-Natal Province – Paul Phelan

Limpopo Province – Sandy McDonald

Northwest Province – Sybrand J. Mostert

Australia – Peter Evans

Mexico – Jamie Carriles Ontanon

New Zealand – John W. McBride

We have ten teams registered for this year’s competition.  There is still space for two additional teams. Any interest, contact Hector immediately.

Next year the One Shot competition will be moved to a new site. Plans are to move it to the Northern Province. This will give our hunters and friends a chance to hunt and see a different area of South Africa.

On-line Special Buffalo

An e-mail was sent to the OSHC members announcing a special hunt donated by Sandy McDonald.  It is a seven day hunt for one hunter and one non-hunter in Mozambique for the following species: cape buffalo, waterbuck, common reedbuck, warthog and bush pig.  Minimum bid is $6000.  This hunt is to help the kids in Mozambique.  All monies received will go directly to a school in Pioukwe, Mozambique.  Please consider bidding on this or passing it to any friend who may have an interest.  If you did not receive the announcement, it can be found on our website under “Sale Items”.

Our Mission – Shoes, Computers and School Supplies

A reminder to all members, we are in need of items for the schools.  As we have witnessed, these kids need shoes.  Our goal is 2000 pair of shoes this year; let’s make sure we reach that goal.  If you know of any corporations willing to donate their old computers we are interested, please contact Hector Kitscha or Phil Rank.  Also, any school supplies such as pencils, pens or tablets are always much needed at these schools.

Books for a Wisconsin

Our organization was able to help a school in Southeast Wisconsin by supplying books through Brian Neville.  The One Shot Hunt Club acted as a facilitator in getting 750 books the Montessori School in Waukesha, Wisconsin.  Brian is the person who supplied the books to South Africa last year and will again in 2004. This school was very much in need of books and was very appreciative for this donation.

2003 One Shot Hunt Videos Are Now Available

The two videos, promotional (30 minutes) and full length of activities (144 minutes), from the 2003 One Shot Hunt are now available.  If you are interest in a copy please contact Hector Kitscha at Custom travel.  E-mail address is ctravel@execpc.com.  The price of the each video is $25.00.

Reno SCI Convention

Many of us attended the SCI convention in Reno and spent some time at the Sandveld Safaris Booth.  A sign promoting the One Shot Hunt Club – South Africa was prominent at the booth.  We did get an opportunity to discuss our club with many SCI attendees.  One of these was the Humanitarian Services Chairman, Gene Rurka of the SCI Foundation.  He is interested in our mission of helping the school children of Africa.  We have sent him information on our club and foundation.

Promoting OSHC

Our President, Hector Kitscha has been very busy promoting the One Shot Hunt Club – SA.  Hector attended the Dallas Safari Club and met with their president to explain our organization and solicit their help in promoting the OSHC to the Dallas members.  Hector is also sending a letter to all SCI local presidents publicizing this year’s competition, soliciting their help in promoting the OSHC and supporting our auction.  An active role promoting the club with friends, outfitters and organizations is must for all members if we expect to grow our club and meet our mission goals.

Auction Hunts

Two hunts bought at the OSHC auction were taken this past year.

Wyoming Bison Hunt - John Demopolous and his brother traveled to Bob Thomsen’s to hunt bison.  John had bid on the hunt last year at the One Shot Hunt.  Both, John and his brother shot excellent bulls.

-                     Wisconsin- Pam and Rick Warner journeyed to John Demopolous’s to hunt white tail deer.  Rick was successful in getting an excellent buck.  Pam also hunted, and was successful harvesting a Wisconsin white tail.

Has anyone seen Bonnie?

It has been report Bonnie is missing from the One Shot Hunt Club headquarters.

f you have seen Bonnie please contact Clyde, Sandy or Francois.  Missing person picture below, it is as Bonnie looked in May 2003.

One Shot Hunt – 2004

The program for the 2004 One Hunt activities is being finalized.  It will be held at the same location as this year, Aventura Resort, Christiana.  The dates are August 8 through August 11, 2004.  The event is three days and three nights, starting on Sunday evening and concluding Wednesday morning.  The tentative schedule is attached to this newsletter.

The registration forms are on the web site, www.oneshot-huntclubsa.com.

Registration forms are also available by contacting Hector at Custom Travel.

All members are encouraged to invite potential shooters for 2004.  We encourage getting this information in as soon as possible, it will greatly help planning the 2004 competition.

Book and Computer Distribution

The books have been distributed to the schools in the Free State.  The Curriculum Department was very happy to receive the books.  These are being distributed as reference books for the schools and are being located in the school libraries for all teachers to use.

The PC’s were given to the Free State Education Department.  We have had discussions with the head of Information Systems for the best distribution.  The first computers will be used in their new computer training centers to teach the teachers computer skills.  These were delivered in July.  It is planned to include teachers from the Boshof Schools as soon as possible.  We are in need of more computers for there are plans to open a number of training centers.

Articles of Interest

Hunting Report

There is an excellent article in the August 2003 Hunting Report about our One Shot Hunt Club.  It explains the rules of the One Shot competition and the results of the 2003 hunt.  The article goes on to explain our mission with the African school children.  And the article concludes with information on the 2004 hunt.

FedEx GSP News

The July/August 2003 FedEx employee news magazine featured a superb article on how they helped to transport our shipment to South Africa last May.  “FedEx Steps In” is a two page article that features pictures of the school visits and explains the One Shot Hunt Club’s mission and how they supported the OSHC in getting the computers and school supplies to South Africa.  Hector was quoted in the article, “FedEx stepped in at a time when we were out of options.  Without FedEx’s support, we simply could not have gotten the donated items to Johannesburg this year.”

OSHC Foundation Inc.

The One Shot Hunt Club is very close setting up the OSHC Foundation Inc.  This will be a non-profit corporation, domiciled in Wisconsin and registered in the United States, dedicated to support the needs of school children in African communities where help is most needed.  The state of Wisconsin has approved the Foundation.  We are waiting for approval, from the IRS.  The OSHC Foundation should be in place before the end of 2003.  This will allow one to deduct their charitable donations to the Benefactor Program.  More information about the Foundation will be included in the next newsletter.  We will let you all know when final approval is received.

2003 Videos

The 30 minute promotional video is now available for $25.00.  If you are interested in a copy, please contact Hector Kitscha telephone (414)-282-5321 or email ctravel@execpc.com. The full length video will be available in December at a cost of $25.00.

Promoting the OSHC

Plans are to promote the One Shot Hunt Club-South Africa at Safari meetings and conventions this year and 2004.  If you would like to do a promotion in your area please contact Hector for registration forms and handout materials.  OSHC-SA plans on being at the Dallas and Reno conventions in 2004.

Dallas

Hector will be attending the Dallas convention in January 2004.  He will be sharing a booth with Sandy McDonald.  The Dallas Safari Club is not associated with SCI so we will have the opportunity to present our club to a new audience.   Plans are to develop a working relationship with the Dallas Safari Club.

            Reno

The OSHC will be represented at the Reno SCI convention.  The OSHC will be sharing space with Sandveld Safaris and Custom Travel.  There will be many One Shot Hunt Club members (16) attending the 2004 convention.  Plans are to have the members represent the club at the booth.  We will be promoting the club by accepting donations, both money and auction items, and signing up potential shooters for 2004 and beyond.

Auction Items for 2004 Event

What are your plans for donating auction items for the 2004?  Please let Larry and Sandy Carlson know what is being donated as soon as you can.  Last minute donations make it very difficult for organizing the auction.  Our goal for 2004 is being able to publish the auction items before the event and having the items listed at the event.  Your help will be much appreciated.

Benefactor Update

The company that donated the books this year has pledged another 8000 books for 2004.    We also plan on working with IBM for computers donations.

One Shot Hunt – 2003

The One Shot Hunt activities were hosted at the Aventura Resort, Christiana which is near Kimberley, South Africa on May 25 through May 28, 2003.  The new location for the One Shot Hunt is a facility that will meet our growing needs.  There was ample space for guests, meeting rooms and an “event” room to handle exhibitors and banquets.  The overall program and activities was much improved from our two previous hunts.

Sunday – May 25

The morning activities were a success.  The tracking seminar by Herman Jordan was well attended. The diamond sorting drew a crowd as many searched diligently for the diamond.  The diamond was found by Jakobus de Wet’s with the help of a young assistant.  The afternoon rifle sight in and competition ran very effectively, supervised by Jack Hagen and Phillip de Bruyn.  There were a number of exhibitors available during the three days, which gave the attendees an opportunity to shop for variety of items.

Sorting for Diamonds

Monday – May 26

The shooting competition and sighting in of rifles continued in the AM before we left for the management hunt.  The springbuck and blesbuck did not cooperate for the management hunt.  It was windy and the animals kept their distance.  A few were shot and a few were missed. Most hunters were ready to get back to the lodge for the cocktail hour.  The evening activities included: drawing for PH’s and hunting areas, reading of the “legend of the hunt” and blessing of the hunt.  This was followed by an excellent barbecue lamb dinner and auction.

Blessing the Hunt

Tuesday – May 27

The hunters were up at 5:00 am in preparation for the One Shot and Past Shooters Competitions.  There was no winner for the One Shot Competition this year since no team was successful in getting 2 springbucks.  The added event, Past Shooter Competition was great activity enjoyed by all the past shooters.  The availability of springbuck for the hunts was great.

The dinner was held in the “Events” Room.  President Hector Kitscha welcomed the group and presented the awards.

The awards given:

Appreciation Award                             Federal Express (Adrian Isemonger)

Member of the Year                               Jack Hagen

Non-member Club Support Award   Moredou Taxidermy (Hilgard and Pikkie Kotze)

President’s Cup                                     Glen Williamson

Screw Up                                                 Diane Demopoulos and Bill Cornell

PH of the Year                                        Vlam Els

Shooting Competition                           Phillip de Bruyn

Management Hunt Winner                    Ed Luzader

One Shot Competition                          “No winner”

Past Shooter Competition                     Dave Bahl and Glen Williamson

Three members of the One Shot Hunt Club – South Africa graciously gave to the Benefactor Program at the Diamond Level.  These were Barry Littlewood, Hector Kitscha and David Collis.  All of those who contributed to the Benefactor Program are now on the web site and the major contributors will be sent certificates.

The banquet was concluded with an auction.  This year’s auctions were much improved and offered everyone a chance to be involved.

School Visits

Wednesday – May 28

This year we attend two schools where other schools were also in attendance.  Again, it was a very moving experience for those who participated.

Beefmaster is near the resort.  It is a farm school run by Beefmaster. Beefmaster is a large beef feed lot operation.  It was an impressive school and children preformed various song and dance routines.

Distribution of Food and Shoes

Boshof is near our new headquarters.  There were two schools in attendance, both from the Boshof area.  The Premier of the Orange Free State Province was there and spoke to us and the children.  We were served lunch.  We had the opportunity to eat with Premier and the teachers from these schools.  At both schools we handed out corn meal and shoes.  We had not received all the shoes so a limited number were given out.   Additional corn meal will be distributed as needed by the schools.

Hector Kitscha and Phil Rank met with Orange Free State Educational Ministry which included department heads for districts and schools, curriculum and information systems at Bloemfontein, Orange Free State, South Africa.  It was a good meeting.  The Curriculum Department will review the text books for use in their schools.  We spent some additional time with Mr. Kok, the head of Educational Management Information Systems discussing how to best utilize the computers we are sending to the schools.  Dave Bahl and Phil Rank will follow up on this project.

Special thanks are given to Federal Express for their effort in getting the shipment from Pittsburgh to South Africa.  FedEx shipped these at their expense and were every helpful in clearing these through South African customs.  This shipment was twenty pallets and weighed 20,000 pounds.  It included computers, software, text books, school supplies and tennis shoes.

New OSHC Headquarters

The One Shot Hunt Club – South Africa now has a permanent headquarters.  It is at Francois farm.  It is an outstanding facility with an excellent lodge, good hunting and beautiful views.  Every member should plan on spending some time there on their next trip to Africa.  We are very fortunate to have this location for our headquarters.

The address is:              Sandveld Safaris

Dates for 2004 OSHC Event

The dates for the 2004 One Shot Hunt will be August 8 through 11, 2004, with the event commencing on a Sunday.  It is recommended the host facility will again be the Aventura Resort.  Mark your 2004 calendars; plans are already underway for this event.  We presently have 7 teams signed up for the 2004 Hunt.

President Elect

The Board of Directors created a new position – President Elect.  The purpose for this position is to provide a means to develop a candidate for the position of President.  The incumbent is to be in this position for one year.  Larry Carlson was nominated by the BOD as the President Elect.  He accepted the position.

New Directors

Two new officers were named at the Board of Directors Meeting; they are Phillip de Bruyn and Vlam Els.  Phillip will be responsible for finance.  Vlam will be responsible to promote the OSHC-SA and recruit membership in South Africa.

Videos 2003

We will again have three videos available for the One Shot Hunt activities.  These are done very professionally.  The three videos include a one hour plus video of all hunt activities, a twenty minute video of the Benefactor Program and a twenty minute promotional video.  The videos will be available in July.  The price is $25.00 US for the full length hunt activities and $15.00 US each for the others.  Please contact Hector Kitscha at Custom Travel for your purchase of these mementos of the hunt.

Newsworthy Events at this Years African Adventure

John and Diane Demopoulos enjoyed there time in Africa, minus the three children.  Nice break for them, although the satellite phone got a lot of use.  John started his hunt in Namibia trying for the elusive leopard, his PH Vlam Els tracked and stalked for days and hours to no avail.  The leopard won.  In Namibia, John shot a klipspringer, warthog and Kalahari springbok.  John took a very nice 43 inch sable at Sandveld Nature Reserve in South Africa.   He also managed to take a black springbok, white blesbok and mountain reedbuck in South Africa.  Diane, the mighty hunter that she is, harvested a big bull giraffe.  Last year she shot 5 animals with five shots.

Glen Williamson has the new #1 SCI blue wildebeest with an unconfirmed green score of 98 ¼.  He shot the animal in May 2003 at Sandveld Nature Reserve near Bloemhof, South Africa.  His PH was Jakobus de Wet.  Glen did not know the monster would score that high and was ecstatic about the possibility of shooting the #1.  He also shot an outstanding waterbuck, 29 ½ inch lengths and 10 inch bases.  Glen said, “It was good trip despite missing my plane by a whole day.  For those who had not heard the story, Glen arrived at the airport an entire day late.  The Delta agent was not joking when he said “Sir, today is May 16th, your ticket was for May 15th.”  Glen’s reply “Don’t you kid with me about this I’ve been waiting to go on this trip for a long time.”  Hence he received the President award for this experience.  Glen took the award away from the Loch’s for which Bucky and Terry are very grateful..

Phil Rank did not want to out done by Glen’s monster blue wildebeest and took the opportunity to take his own large blue wildebeest trophy also at Sandveld Nature Reserve.  Although it did not beat Glen’s, it scored 97.  Phil also shot a nice Tsessebe at Sandveld.  His Ph was Vella Brink.

Pat Kitscha decided to go to Africa with her husband John for a fun vacation.  Never did she expect to have such an experience in her life.  She shot a rifle for the first time with great success.  She shot an impala and a springbok, each with one shoot.  Pat said, “I’m hooked, I really like this and want to come back to Africa.”  She also participated in the one shot competition with many nerves and a strong determination to get her Springbok, but the Springbok gods were not on her side this year, maybe next time.  Pat also shot a 12 gauge shotgun for the first time, her friend Terry forgot to tell it has a bit of a kick.  She got a nice bruise on her shoulder, sorry about that.  John also hunted; he shot a red hartebeest and black wildebeest.  Pat and John ended their holiday with a visit to Cape Town where they visited the wine country.

Jack Hagen was the night hunter.  He decided to hunt some smaller critters.  Jack’s PH was Phillip Bruyn.   It is difficult to try to write about his many experiences.  It is better to leave this discussion for a cocktail hour when Jack is having a brandy Manhattan.

Bucky and Terry Loch started their quest for the Big Five by each shooting a Cape buffalo.  Terry shot a cow with a 40 inch spread and Bucky shot a bull, it has a 44 inch spread and should score in the top 40 for SCI.  Terry enjoyed her hunt at Bush Grove in Hoesdsprit, South Africa.  She and Bucky were guided by PH Mils Kruger.  Terry felt Mils did a fantastic job preparing her for the hunt.  He took the time and energy to teach Terry how to shoot the 375 H&H Mag and where to shoot the animal.  Terry said, “This made all the difference in making a clean shot versus chasing a wounded animal.”  She used one round in getting her buffalo; the relief on Mils’ face was priceless.  The buffalo ran thirty yards and expired.  Terry also shot a nice nyala.  Her husband, Bucky took a nice waterbuck, warthog and baboon in the Hoesdsprit area.  It was now Bucky’s turn at the Cape buffalo as they moved to Francois de Wet’s Lebenstraum Farm in the Free State near Kimberley.  Bucky shot an excellent Cape buffalo.  The hunt was guided by Mils Kruger and Andre van der Westhuizen.  It took three days of tracking to find the large herd, but patience paid off in finding the herd and taking a great trophy.  Bucky said, “It was worth the wait and rain to get this monster.  I got so excited my legs started to shake.”  The day after his hunt, he saw a 46 inch monster at Sandveld for which he wished he had waited.  Terry continued her onslaught by shooting a white springbuck, a white blesbok (SCI record book animal), black wildebeest and two common springbok.  Terry stated, “I took seven shots and had seven dead animals, four of which dropped in their tracks.”  As for the ammo story, Terry and Bucky will remember to put things back to where they were so you can find them.  The question is how many boxes of ammo did they buy, lose, give away, borrow and shoot on this trip?
